ISO 20000 - where does it fit with ITIL?

Given the reliance most organisations have on IT, it is imperative that their IS services are delivered in a consistent and rigorous fashion. Whilst ITIL provides the framework, ISO 20000 provides an International Standard to benchmark the quality of the services delivered to the customer. It is based on the original BSI Standard BSI 15000, is fully compatible with ITIL (and is heavily based on it), and comes in two parts:

ISO20000-1 is the 'Specification for Service Management' which defines the standard and sets out the requirements for an organisation to deliver IT service management. It is relevant to those responsible for initiating, implementing or maintaining IT service management in their organization. This will enable organizations to benchmark their capability in delivering managed services, measuring service levels and assessing performance.

ISO20000-2 is the ' Code of Practice for Service Management', and describes the best practices, and the requirements for Part 1.
